East Los Angeles, California, USA
KLAX-FM (97.9 FM), branded "La Raza 97.9," is a commercial radio station licensed to East Los Angeles, California, broadcasting a regional Mexican music format to the Greater Los Angeles area, along with news and community-affairs segments. It is owned by Spanish Broadcasting System.
The station began broadcasting April 22, 1949, as KNOB, later becoming an all-jazz station in 1957 and a Spanish-language hit music station as KSKQ in 1983. In 1992, under general manager Alfredo Rodriguez, the station relaunched with a Banda music format as KLAX, becoming the first Spanish-language station in Los Angeles to lead the overall market in ratings. The station moved its city of license from Long Beach to East Los Angeles in 1997-98. In 2002, KLAX narrowed its format to the current "La Raza 97.9" regional Mexican branding. Morning host Renán "El Cucuy" Almendárez Coello helped coordinate a March 25, 2006, demonstration in downtown Los Angeles that drew an estimated 500,000 participants opposing federal immigration legislation.
