Biography

Kitty von Bertele is a co-founder and deputy director of Multitudes, a European foundation that supports political changemakers. She joined the board of openDemocracy, the UK-based independent media outlet, in 2022, and previously chaired the Charitable Journalism Project, a UK research initiative examining public-benefit journalism. Before Multitudes, she spent nearly five years as principal for Western Europe at Luminate, the philanthropic organization founded by Pierre Omidyar, where she sourced and managed grants in the UK, Germany, and France supporting independent media, civic empowerment, and data and digital rights. Earlier in her career, von Bertele worked in the Open Government Partnership's Support Unit beginning in June 2015, on secondment from the UK government, following roles in the UK Cabinet Office's transparency and open data team and the UK Ministry of Justice. She holds a B.A. in International History and Politics from the University of Leeds (2006–2009).
