The Archives and Registrar unit of Karolinska Institutet (KI) is the official archival and records management function of one of the world's leading medical universities, located in Solna and Stockholm, Sweden. The unit ensures proper management of KI's public documents in compliance with Swedish statutory requirements and provides archival services to researchers, staff, and the public.
Karolinska Institutet was founded in 1810 and has grown over more than 200 years into an internationally renowned medical and life sciences university with approximately 500 employees in its central administration. The Archives and Registrar unit manages KI's obligations as a government agency under Swedish public records law. Historical archival materials related to KI prior to 1900 are also held at Stockholms Stadsarkiv (Stockholm City Archives). Older rare materials are managed by KI's Hagströmer Library, which holds the university's historical manuscript and rare book collections.
The Archives and Registrar unit holds official KI records including degree certificates, administrative records, departmental files, and institutional documentation. The Hagströmer Library, a closely related KI resource, holds rare medical and scientific manuscripts and printed books from the history of medicine, including materials from the Collegium Medicum, personal archives of KI professors, and internationally significant works by Vesalius, Harvey, Darwin, and Linnaeus. Historical manuscripts linked to KI are also accessible through the Alvin cultural heritage database.
Individuals may contact the archive for older degree certificates, degree verification, and historical document inquiries. The registrar handles requests for disclosure of public documents. Departmental registrars operate across KI's campuses in Solna and Huddinge.
