Journal of Commerce (JOC) is a biweekly trade magazine and subscription news service covering international containerized shipping, transportation and logistics. It is part of S&P Global Market Intelligence.
First published in New York in 1827 by Samuel F.B. Morse and Arthur Tappan. The paper operated deepwater schooners to intercept incoming vessels for early shipping news and was a founding member of the Associated Press. It broke news of the 1973 Arab oil embargo six days ahead of other outlets. Converted from a daily newspaper to the weekly JOC Week magazine in 2000 and launched JOC.com. The Economist Group sold the JOC to Commonwealth Business Media in 2001; United Business Media acquired Commonwealth in 2006; IHS Inc. later acquired the publication, and it became part of S&P Global in 2022 through S&P's merger with IHS Markit.
Reported in detail on the advent of containerized shipping starting with the first container ship voyage in 1956. Organizes the annual TPM conference in Long Beach, California, one of the world's largest shipping industry events, along with the Breakbulk and Project Cargo and Inland Distribution conferences.
