James E. Mueller is interim dean and associate dean of the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas, where he is also a professor specializing in print and digital journalism. Born in 1960, he holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Missouri–Columbia and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Before entering academia, he worked as a reporter, editor, and photographer for newspapers in and around St. Louis, Missouri, and was an assistant professor at Pittsburg State University from 1998 to 2000 before joining the University of North Texas faculty in 2000. He has also served as a visiting professor at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique. Mueller's research covers media management, political journalism, and the history of journalism, and he is the author of several books, including Towel Snapping the Press: Bush's Journey from Locker-Room Antics to Message Control (2006), Tag Teaming the Press, on the Clintons' relationship with the media, and Ambitious Honor, on George Armstrong Custer's journalism career.
