History and Background

Istanbul Technical University (İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, İTÜ) is one of the world's oldest technical universities, founded in 1773 by Sultan Mustafa III as the Imperial School of Naval Engineering. Today it is a major public technical university with six campuses in Istanbul, offering 92 undergraduate and 188 graduate programs in engineering, natural sciences, architecture, and social sciences. ITU is consistently ranked among Turkey's top universities and first in Turkey in engineering and technology.

Polen – ITU Academic Open Archive

Polen is ITU's institutional academic open archive, accessible at polen.itu.edu.tr. The project was established to provide web access to theses, dissertations, articles, and other academic materials completed at Istanbul Technical University. The current platform, marketed as the ITU University Research Hub, stores all academic resources—books, articles, theses, papers, reports, and research data—directly or indirectly published by ITU's academic and administrative staff and students, in compliance with international standards and copyright regulations.

Collections and Holdings

The archive contains theses and dissertations accepted by ITU, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, technical reports, and research data from all of ITU's 14 faculties and research centers. Collections span all fields in which ITU is active: civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics, naval architecture and ocean engineering, architecture, natural sciences, and more. Metadata and open-access content are available for harvesting via OAI-PMH.

Access and Usage

Materials in Polen can be accessed by the public online. Downloading of thesis content requires authors' permission. Users are required to cite sources when using archived academic materials. Modification or creation of derivative works from archived theses is not permitted without authorization. The library contact for the archive is the Mustafa İnan Library at ITU's Ayazağa Campus.
