The Archivio Storico del Senato della Repubblica (Historical Archives of the Senate of the Italian Republic) is the official repository for the institutional, administrative, and cultural records produced by the Italian Senate. Established in 2001 and opened to the public in 2003, the archive operates under the Italian Senate and is located in Rome.
The archive was formally established in 2001 as part of a broader reform of the Senate's administrative structure. It was opened for public consultation in 2003. Its mandate encompasses records from both the Senate of the Kingdom of Italy (1848–1943) and the Senate of the Italian Republic (1948–present). Institutional records in the collection date back to 1848, coinciding with the promulgation of the Albertine Statute.
The archive holds the complete institutional records of the Italian Senate, including assembly proceedings, presidential records, committee minutes on legislative bills, the records of the General Secretariat, and administrative office files. Among the most valuable holdings are private collections donated by prominent Italian politicians from both the monarchic and republican eras, including papers of Imperiali, Fanfani, Leone, De Martino, and Bonino, among others. The archive also maintains a biographical database of senators appointed during the Kingdom of Italy from 1848 to 1943.
The archive has developed the Archivi on line project, enabling partner historical institutions to publish their most significant collections on the Senate's website. This initiative provides online access to important historical documents and political correspondence. The archive also publishes original documents, organizes public conferences, and collaborates with universities and cultural institutions.
Researchers may consult the archive's holdings online through the Senate's patrimony website at patrimonio.archivio.senato.it. In-person consultation is available at the archive's premises in Rome. The archive cooperates with universities and other cultural institutions and regularly organizes public exhibitions and academic events.
