Use of DataThe Iran Open Data Center (IOD) is an independent online data journalism and open data organization dedicated to making public data generated by the Iranian government accessible to citizens, journalists, activists, researchers, and policymakers. In an era of increasing restrictions on access to official Iranian statistics and government data, IOD collects, processes, analyzes, and publishes government datasets with the aim of promoting transparency and accountability regarding Iran.
IOD describes itself as a pioneer in making public data generated by the Iranian government accessible to all. The organization's activities encompass data collection and processing from official Iranian sources; data-driven journalism and investigative reporting; interactive data visualization and mapping tools; training programs for open data advocates; and publication of analysis pieces on Iranian economics, politics, energy, demographics, and social conditions. IOD publishes in both English and Persian.
IOD's dataset library covers a wide range of topics derived from official Iranian government sources, including population and civil registration data, environmental indicators, meteorological data, economic and financial statistics, military budget analysis, energy sector data, and election results. The portal provides downloadable datasets as well as interactive maps and analytical articles. IOD has published notable analyses on Iran's military budget, oil export revenues under sanctions, energy infrastructure, and protest-related events.
The IOD portal is freely accessible at iranopendata.org and provides both English and Persian interfaces. Datasets are available for download and the portal includes a searchable map tool and a news/analysis section.
