The Iran Data Portal is an English- and Persian-language online resource hosted at Syracuse University that provides social science data on Iran. It serves journalists, academics, policymakers, NGOs, and others seeking to analyze political and socioeconomic developments in contemporary Iran. The project has been funded by the Social Science Research Council, Princeton University, and Syracuse University, and is led by scholars of Iranian politics and society.
The Iran Social Science Data Portal was developed under the leadership of Mehrzad Boroujerdi, a political scientist who served as professor of political science at Syracuse University from 1992 to 2019 and is the author of multiple works on Iranian politics. The portal was created to address the scarcity of organized, accessible social science data on Iran, particularly in an era of increasing restrictions on access to official Iranian government statistics.
The portal aggregates a wide range of datasets and documents including: socioeconomic data drawn from Iranian government sources and censuses; electoral data covering Iranian elections; information on political parties and factions; public opinion survey data spanning nearly five decades (1975 to present); translations of selected Iranian laws and regulations; university and college listings; and links to external databases maintained by individual Iran scholars. The portal also provides access to Iran's 20-year national development vision documents and other key policy texts. A section titled 'Data by Individual Researchers' hosts datasets contributed by Iran scholars from around the world.
The portal is freely accessible online at irandataportal.syr.edu. Data is available for download in spreadsheet formats. Both English and Persian interfaces are provided.
