Internet Culturale (full title: Internet Culturale – Cataloghi e Collezioni Digitali delle Biblioteche Italiane, or Italian Libraries Digital Collections and Catalogues) is an Italian national digital portal providing integrated access to the catalogues and digitized collections of Italian public libraries and major cultural institutions. It is operated by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico delle Biblioteche Italiane e per le Informazioni Bibliografiche (ICCU), a body of Italy's Ministry of Culture (MiC).
The idea for a coordinated Italian digital library was first proposed in 1999 and formalized with the establishment of the Italian Digital Library (Biblioteca Digitale Italiana, BDI) Steering Committee in April 2001. The first version of Internet Culturale was created in 2005 as part of the BDI and Cultural Tourism Network project. The portal was substantially re-engineered in 2010 and relaunched as Internet Culturale – Catalogues and Digital Collections, with an expanded mission and editorial policy. ICCU itself was established in its current form in 1975, succeeding the National Centre for the Union Catalogue created in 1951.
The portal integrates multiple national databases and digitized collections, including the SBN national library catalogue (over 11 million bibliographic records), manuscript databases (Manus Online), the 16th-century Italian editions census (EDIT16), digitized periodicals (Emeroteca Braidense), audio and video resources, and historical catalogues. Partner repositories include the Teca ICCU digital library, the National Central Library of Florence, the Biblioteca Marciana, and other significant Italian institutions. The portal provides access to manuscripts, maps, newspapers, prints, musical scores, photographs, and other heritage materials.
Internet Culturale is freely accessible online at www.internetculturale.it. It supports both bibliographic catalogue searches and direct access to digital objects through a unified interface. The portal aggregates resources from approximately 280 partner libraries and cultural institutions and feeds content into Europeana and CulturaItalia, Italy's national cultural heritage aggregator.
