The INGV Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT) operates Italy's national earthquake monitoring service and provides public access to real-time and historical seismic data through its dedicated portal at terremoti.ingv.it. This platform is a primary entry point for earthquake data produced by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), established in 1999 as Italy's national geophysics and volcanology research institute.
The earthquake catalogue and seismic data services provide access to a comprehensive suite of databases. The Italian Seismological Instrumental and Parametric Database (ISIDe) contains parametric earthquake locations for the Italian region from January 1985 to the present, drawing on data from more than 500 stations of the National Seismic Network (RSN). The Italian Seismic Bulletin (BSI), published quarterly since 2015, provides analyst-reviewed earthquake parameters. The Italian Archive of Historical Earthquake Data (ASMI) makes available parameters for more than 6,000 historical earthquakes of interest for the Italian peninsula since 461 BC.
INGV's seismic surveillance center operates continuously (H24/7) and is required under its agreement with Italy's Civil Protection Department (DPC) to report all earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater within Italian borders, all events of magnitude 5.0 or greater in the Mediterranean, and all events of magnitude 6.0 or greater globally.
Earthquake data can be retrieved in QuakeML, text, KML, and Atom formats. Waveform data is available in MiniSEED format via FDSN-compliant web services. The portal also provides maps of seismicity, networks of monitoring stations, and educational resources for the public. All data is distributed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licensing.
