History and Background

The Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) is Mexico's autonomous national statistical and geographic agency. It was created by presidential decree on January 25, 1983, under President Miguel de la Madrid, consolidating several predecessor agencies including the General Directorate of Statistics (active since 1882) and the General Directorate of Geography (established 1968). In 2008, INEGI was granted full constitutional autonomy, reinforcing its independence in the production and dissemination of official statistical and geographic information. Its headquarters are located in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

INEGI Open Data Portal

INEGI's Datos Abiertos (Open Data) portal at inegi.org.mx/datosabiertos provides free, machine-readable access to the agency's statistical and geographic datasets in formats compliant with Mexico's Technical Standard for Open Data. Datasets are available for download in standard formats and cover a wide range of demographic, economic, geographic, and social topics.

Collections and Holdings

INEGI is responsible for conducting Mexico's General Population and Housing Census (every ten years), economic censuses (every five years), and agricultural censuses. The open data portal provides access to census microdata and aggregates, national accounts, employment and labor market statistics, price indices, trade data, geographic boundary files, and environmental statistics. The agency also publishes monthly GDP estimates and consumer confidence surveys.

Access and Usage

All data on the INEGI Open Data portal is freely available without registration for most datasets. The portal supports download in formats including CSV, XLS, and others. An API is also available for programmatic data access. Data is used extensively by government, academia, business, and civil society for policy analysis, economic research, and planning.
