The Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA) is a non-profit organisation based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, formally established in April 2007. It evolved from the Cemeti Art Foundation (Yayasan Seni Cemeti), which operated from 1995 to 2007 and had been a pioneering alternative art space in Yogyakarta. When the Foundation decided to focus specifically on documentation and archiving of Indonesian visual art, it reconstituted itself as IVAA. The transition reflected a growing awareness of the need for dedicated art infrastructure independent of government and academic institutions, particularly in the post-Reformation (post-1998) era of Indonesian contemporary art.
IVAA's collections encompass photographs, audiovisual recordings, and printed documents relating to Indonesian visual art practice from the pre-independence period to the present. Printed materials include exhibition catalogues, research reports, newspaper clippings, artist portfolios, and textbooks. As of the mid-2020s, the digital collection exceeds 20 million items. An online database at archive.ivaa-online.org provides browsable access to artists' directories, artwork documentation, and art event records. Physical collections are accessible through the RumahIVAA library in Yogyakarta.
IVAA holds extensive newspaper clippings documenting Indonesian art criticism and cultural journalism, along with audiovisual recordings of art events and media coverage. These materials provide a unique resource for studying how the Indonesian press covered contemporary art and cultural movements, especially during the politically charged post-Reformation period.
The digital archive is freely accessible online at archive.ivaa-online.org, with low-resolution images and PDFs available for public browsing. High-resolution materials and reproduction rights require a letter of agreement with IVAA. Physical access at RumahIVAA in Yogyakarta is available by appointment. IVAA also runs an active public programme of discussions, workshops, forums, and exhibitions at its Yogyakarta space.
