The Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (ICCD), or Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation, is a major institution of Italy's Ministry of Culture with scientific and administrative autonomy. Located in the monumental complex of San Michele a Ripa Grande in Rome, ICCD manages the national catalog of Italy's archaeological, architectural, historical-artistic, and ethno-anthropological heritage, and preserves one of Italy's most important historical photographic archives.
ICCD was established in 1975, absorbing two historical predecessor institutions: the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale (National Photographic Cabinet, founded in 1895 by engineer and photographer Giovanni Gargiolli) and the Aerofototeca Nazionale (National Aerial Photo Library, founded in 1958). Gargiolli had originally established the National Photographic Cabinet to document Italy's artistic heritage and strengthen national identity following unification. In 1906 he initiated an acquisition policy that brought in major historical collections, including the Tuminello calotypes (602 phototypes) and the Cugnoni collection (approximately 5,000 collodion plates). These form among the most valuable holdings in the photographic archive today. In December 2024, ICCD celebrated its 50th anniversary.
ICCD's holdings include the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale archive of approximately 400,000 black-and-white photographic negatives, 700,000 black-and-white photographic prints from various collections, and 20,000 colour slides — totaling over one million photographic items covering Italian society and national heritage since around 1900. The institute also houses the Aerofototeca Nazionale for aerial photography, the Museo Archivio di Fotografia Storica (MaFos) with a standing exhibition of 19th–20th century photographic instruments, and a Photography History Library. ICCD manages the Catalogo Generale (General Catalogue) of Italian heritage through its SIGEC (General Information System for Cataloguing) database. In recent years, ICCD has also acquired archival copies of contemporary photographic projects by artists including Guido Guidi, Tommaso Bonaventura, and Alessandro Imbriaco.
ICCD's photographic holdings include extensive press-related and documentary photography documenting Italian public life, architecture, and culture across more than a century. The Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale's collections have been used extensively by scholars, journalists, and publishers documenting Italian history and heritage.
ICCD is open to researchers and the public, with access to photographic and documentary materials available in the reading room. Photographic reproductions of more than 50,000 digitized images can be purchased online. The MaFos museum is open by appointment, Monday–Friday 10:00–17:00. ICCD also organizes temporary exhibitions and artist residency programs.
