Hubert "Hub" Brown is dean of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (CJC), a position he has held since July 1, 2021, and the college's first Black dean. He holds a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Before entering academia, he spent more than 15 years reporting, producing and anchoring for commercial local television news and public television, covering political and state government beats and producing public affairs documentaries. He joined the faculty of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1996, where he taught broadcast reporting, newscast production, media ethics and media and diversity, and served as associate dean for research, creativity, international initiatives and diversity. As dean at Florida, Brown has funded eight new faculty positions, grown post-pandemic enrollment, increased donor gifts by 35 percent (including an $8 million endowment, the college's largest gift), and launched the CJC 2028 strategic plan and the Atlas Lab, an AI-driven digital media analysis lab. He is vice president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, set to become its president in 2025, and is a member of the Hearst Journalism Awards Steering Committee, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Broadcast Education Association.
