Hong Kong Memory (香港記憶) is an online digital archive platform operated by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government. The platform collects, digitizes, and provides public access to materials documenting Hong Kong's cultural heritage, history, and collective memory, with a particular focus on materials that might otherwise be difficult to access or at risk of loss.
Hong Kong Memory was launched as a digital heritage initiative to harness the power of digitization and online access to preserve and disseminate materials relating to Hong Kong's history and culture. It draws on the collections of public libraries, museums, and private donors, as well as community contributions, to build a comprehensive digital record of Hong Kong's past. The platform has been active since the 2010s as part of broader digital heritage efforts by the Hong Kong government and public library system.
The platform hosts digitized photographs, films, audio recordings, maps, documents, oral history interviews, and ephemera. Thematic collections cover Hong Kong's history by district, industry, and social topic. Topics represented include everyday life in historic Hong Kong neighborhoods, traditional crafts and industries, festivals and cultural practices, the development of Hong Kong's built environment, and the experiences of specific communities. The archive actively collects contributed materials from the public through crowdsourcing initiatives, building a participatory record of collective memory.
Hong Kong Memory includes collections relating to the history of Hong Kong's media industry, including historical photographs of newspaper offices and printing establishments, records related to broadcasting, and documentation of the development of Hong Kong's vibrant popular press. The platform's oral history collections include interviews with journalists and media figures, providing first-person accounts of Hong Kong media history unavailable elsewhere.
The platform is freely accessible online in both English and Chinese. Users can browse thematic collections, search by keyword, and contribute materials. High-resolution images and media files are available for download for non-commercial use. The platform is designed for broad public engagement as well as academic research, and includes educational resources for schools and community organizations.
