The Hong Kong Central Library (香港中央圖書館) is the flagship institution of the Hong Kong Public Libraries system, operated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Located in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island, the Central Library is the largest public library in Hong Kong and one of the major library facilities in Southeast Asia.
The current Hong Kong Central Library building was opened in May 2001, replacing the former City Hall Library which had served as the territory's central public library since the 1960s. Designed as a landmark cultural facility, the building houses a vast collection of print and digital resources. It is a key component of Hong Kong's public library network, which comprises more than 70 branch libraries and mobile libraries serving the entire territory.
The Central Library holds over 1.5 million items, including books, periodicals, newspapers, audiovisual materials, electronic databases, and special collections. Its Hong Kong Collection focuses on materials relating to Hong Kong history, society, culture, and affairs, including extensive holdings of local newspapers and periodicals. The library also maintains substantial collections of Chinese literature and reference materials, as well as international publications. Special reading rooms include those for multimedia resources, newspapers and periodicals, and reference works.
The Hong Kong Collection is of particular significance for journalism and media research. The Central Library maintains comprehensive holdings of Hong Kong newspapers and periodicals, both current and historical, in Chinese and English. These collections document the development of the Hong Kong press from the colonial era through the present, including major titles such as the South China Morning Post, Ming Pao, Sing Tao Daily, and numerous other publications. The library also holds reference materials on media law, broadcasting history, and communications in Hong Kong.
The Central Library is open to all Hong Kong residents and visitors. Library card holders can access physical and digital collections, and many electronic resources are available remotely. The library also provides reference services, reading programs, and cultural activities. Special Collections require separate access arrangements.
