The HNMS Free Data portal is an open-access data service provided by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS; Greek: Εθνική Μετεωρολογική Υπηρεσία, ΕΜΥ). It allows the scientific community, educational institutions, researchers, and the general public to access primary climate and meteorological data collected by HNMS's network of weather stations across Greece.
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service was founded in 1931 under the Ministry of Aviation and is operated under the auspices of the Hellenic Air Force. It is headquartered at the former Athens International Airport in Elliniko, Attica. HNMS employs approximately 565 staff and maintains a national network of meteorological stations covering almost the entire country. It is responsible for weather forecasts, marine forecasts for METAREA 3 (Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea), aviation weather services, and climate monitoring.
The Free Data section of the HNMS website (emy.gr/en/free-data) provides free access to primary climate data including temperature time series, precipitation records, sunshine hours, and other climatological parameters from HNMS stations. The portal supports the Climatic Atlas of Greece, a digital resource based on long-term meteorological observations. Data is provided to serve scientific research, education, agriculture, transport, environmental management, and public awareness about Greece's climate.
Data is accessible via the HNMS web portal at emy.gr. The portal also provides climate data visualizations and applications, weather forecasts, satellite imagery, and marine weather products.
