Use of DataHistoric Images of Sri Lanka, hosted at Lankapura.com, is a curated online archive of more than 1,000 rare historical photographs documenting Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) from the 1850s through the 1970s. The archive presents themed galleries with contextual captions, covering the colonial era, landscape, architecture, everyday life, and historical events on the island.
Lankapura.com was founded in 2005 by Bawantha Perera as a personal project undertaken during his studies, initially alongside the related site Mahavamsa.org. What began as a test bed grew, with contributions from dedicated image enthusiasts and an engaged online community, into an extensive photo blog and gallery. The site is currently funded and managed by Artland and Techshop Lanka. Its work has been recognized in publications such as the Sunday Mirror and in media projects produced by the BBC and National Geographic, which have licensed images from the archive.
The archive comprises over 1,000 images organized thematically and by photographer or publisher. Collection highlights include:
The archive is freely accessible online without registration. High-resolution downloads of selected images and maps are available. The site invites contributions of historical photographs from the public, provided the contributor holds rights to share the material. Images have been made available for non-commercial research use. Printed and framed vintage images are also offered for purchase to support the site's continued operation.
