Hindustan Times is an Indian English-language daily newspaper based in New Delhi, the flagship publication of HT Media Limited, an entity controlled by the Birla family. It is one of India's largest newspapers by circulation and is the second most widely read English-language paper in India after The Times of India.
Founded in 1924 by Sunder Singh Lyallpuri, founder-father of the Akali movement and the Shiromani Akali Dal, with later financial support from Madan Mohan Malaviya and Mahatma Gandhi; the paper played a role in the Indian independence movement. K.M. Panikkar was its first editor; Devdas Gandhi, youngest son of Mahatma Gandhi, served as managing editor from 1937 until his death in 1957. The paper's Hindi-language sister publication, Hindustan, launched in 1936. Shobhana Bhartia, daughter of industrialist Krishna Kumar Birla, joined the paper in 1986 as its first female chief executive of a national newspaper and remains Chairperson and Group Editorial Director of HT Media.
Marked its centennial in 2024. Publishes simultaneous editions from New Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Patna, Chandigarh and Ranchi, and operates sister publications including Mint (English business daily), Hindustan (Hindi daily), and the children's and literary magazines Nandan and Kadambani.
