HELIX is Greece's national data service and e-infrastructure for data-intensive research, developed as a joint initiative of the Athena Research Center and GRNET (the Greek Research and Technology Network). It supports cross-disciplinary research and promotes Open Science and Open Data policies in Greece.
HELIX emerged from the national research infrastructure program for Big Computing and Big Data in Greece and has been supported by national funding aligned with European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) goals. It was publicly introduced during the 2019 Open Access Week and has since been continuously developed. HELIX is connected to the OpenAIRE pan-European network and serves as a national node for research data management.
HELIX operates through three interoperable pillars: HELIX Pubs, a discovery platform for scientific publications linked to European repositories; HELIX Data, a data catalogue and repository enabling deposit, discovery, and retrieval of open datasets (with permanent identifiers for citation); and HELIX Lab, an open collection of applications including Jupyter Notebooks for data analysis and experimentation in multiple programming languages such as Python, R, and Julia. All services are available free of charge to researchers, educators, and the public.
HELIX hosts community groups linked to major research infrastructures operating in Greece, including CLARIN:EL and ELIXIR-GR. It is aligned with the principles of Open Science, promoting FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data. The platform email for contact is hello@hellenicdataservice.gr.
