HCMR Data & Repositories is the data management and open data portal of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), Greece's premier governmental marine science institution. The portal aggregates and provides access to scientific datasets, research data, and repositories maintained by HCMR's three research institutes.
The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) was established in 2003 by Presidential Decree 164/2003, through the merger of the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete (IMBC) and the National Centre for Marine Research (NCMR). It operates under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI) of the Ministry of Development and Investments. HCMR is the largest marine research institution in the Eastern Mediterranean.
HCMR comprises three research institutes: the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC), the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW), and the Institute of Oceanography (IO). Headquarters are located at the TRITON marine research park in Anavyssos, Attica.
HCMR participates in major European and global data infrastructure networks, including SeaDataNet, EDMED, EMODnet (covering Bathymetry, Geology, Seabed Habitats, Chemistry, and Biology components), and GBIF (as the MedOBIS node). The Data & Repositories portal provides access to oceanographic data, biological datasets, and marine environmental monitoring data collected through decades of research across the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
HCMR's data holdings are accessible via the data portal at hcmr.gr/en/datarepositories/ and through partner international infrastructure portals. HCMR also manages CretAquarium, the largest public aquarium in Greece, serving over 250,000 visitors annually.
