Matthew Hays is a Montreal-based journalist, author, and film critic. He holds a B.F.A. in film studies (with distinction) and an M.A. in media studies from Concordia University, where he teaches courses in film studies, journalism, and communication studies; he also teaches film at Marianopolis College. He received the Concordia Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence in 2007 and the President's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013. He is co-editor, with Tom Waugh, of the Queer Film Classics book series. In 2008-09 he served as a programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival, and has served on juries for TIFF, Hot Docs, Fantasia, Montreal's Image+Nation Queer Film Festival, RIDM, and the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards. His journalism has appeared in the Guardian, the Washington Post, Time, CBC Arts, the Gay & Lesbian Review, and Cult MTL, among other outlets.
