Programs and emphasis

The school emphasizes accuracy, balance, fairness, integrity, and high ethical standards in journalism and strategic communications. Students gain hands-on experience through internships with media outlets and public relations agencies nationwide; a Hampton team won first place in the 2023-24 Hearst Investigative Reporting competition.

History

The school was established in 2004 at Hampton University, a historically Black university founded in 1868. Tony Brown, longtime host and executive producer of "Tony Brown's Journal" and a civil rights advocate, served as its inaugural dean from 2004 to 2009 and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2012; he died June 17, 2026, at age 93.

Julia A. Wilson: Dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, a 2023 Alex Trebek Legacy Fellow of the TV Academy Foundation, who secured the school's ACEJMC reaccreditation in 2023.
