The Greek Archives Inventory (Εθνικό Ευρετήριο Αρχείων, ΕΕΑ) is an online national registry of archives in Greece, implemented by the General State Archives (Γενικά Αρχεία του Κράτους, GAK). The GAK was founded in 1914 with the mission to supervise, rescue, conserve, record, digitize, classify, and index the country's archival heritage. The Inventory was established as part of GAK's supervisory role under Article 171 of Law 4610/2019, which mandates that all holders of archives—whether public bodies or private individuals—must declare their holdings to the GAK. The platform is built on the Access to Memory (AtoM) open-source archival software.
The Inventory serves as a national finding aid, directing users to archives held across Greece in government agencies, municipalities, universities, cultural institutions, churches, and private collections. It does not hold physical archives itself but rather provides standardized archival descriptions compiled in accordance with the International Standard for Archival Description (ISAD(G), 2nd edition). Content is continuously updated as institutions submit Archival Description Forms. The Inventory complements the GAK's digital database @ρχειομνήμων, which provides online access to holdings from 37 GAK agencies across Greece.
The Inventory is freely accessible online at greekarchivesinventory.gak.gr in Greek and English. It is intended as a discovery tool for researchers; requests for access to actual archival documents must be directed to the holding institution. The Inventory does not serve individual researcher requests. For further assistance, users may contact the GAK Central Service's Department of Archive Processing, Inventorying, and the National Archives Inventory.
