Gracia C. Martore is chair of the board of The Associated Press and the former president and CEO of TEGNA Inc. and its predecessor, Gannett Co., Inc. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1973 with a double major in history and political science and worked for 12 years in banking before joining Gannett in 1985 as assistant treasurer. She rose through the company over the following decades, becoming vice president of the treasury group in 1993, treasurer and vice president of investor relations in 1998, senior vice president of finance in 2001, senior vice president and chief financial officer in 2003, executive vice president and CFO in 2005, and president and chief operating officer in 2010. On October 6, 2011, Martore was named president and CEO of Gannett, succeeding Craig Dubow. As CEO, she doubled the company's broadcast portfolio, led its 2015 separation into two publicly traded companies (TEGNA, comprising broadcast and digital media, and a separate publishing company retaining the Gannett name), and oversaw TEGNA's 2017 spin-off of Cars.com. She retired as TEGNA's president and CEO in June 2017 and was succeeded by Dave Lougee. Martore was elected to the Associated Press board of directors in 2013, became vice chair, and was elevated to chair in April 2022. She also serves on the boards of FM Global, Omnicom Group, United Rentals, and WestRock Company, and previously served on the boards of MeadWestvaco Corporation and the Paley Center for Media. She was named to Fortune's 50 Most Powerful Women in Business list for three consecutive years and to Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women list.
