Washington, D.C., USA
Government Executive is a Washington, D.C.-based digital publication covering the business of the U.S. federal government for civilian and military officials, part of GovExec Media Group alongside Nextgov, Defense One, Route Fifty and City & State.
Government Executive published its first issue in March 1969 under founding editor and publisher C.W. Borklund, who personally acquired the magazine's rights from original owner Litton Publications Inc. in 1971. National Journal Group, then part of Times Mirror, purchased the magazine in 1987, installing Timothy B. Clark as editor for more than two decades. Businessman David G. Bradley bought National Journal Group in 1997, later renaming his company Atlantic Media after acquiring The Atlantic Monthly in 1999. The company spun off its IT-reporting coverage into Nextgov in 2007, launched Defense One in 2013 and Route Fifty in 2015. In March 2020, private equity firm Growth Catalyst Partners acquired a controlling stake in Government Executive Media Group from Atlantic Media, with Bradley remaining a board member; the company acquired City & State in 2021 and 1105 Media's Public Sector 360 Group, including Federal Computer Week and Washington Technology, that same year. Longtime editor-in-chief Tom Shoop stepped down in 2021 and was succeeded by Tanya Ballard Brown, formerly of NPR.
