The German National Library of Economics – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW; Deutsche Zentralbibliothek für Wirtschaftswissenschaften – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft) is the world's largest research infrastructure for economic literature. A foundation under public law of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and a member of the Leibniz Association, ZBW operates from two locations in Kiel and Hamburg. It provides comprehensive specialist information services in economics and business studies for researchers, students, institutions, and policymakers worldwide.
ZBW was founded in 1919 by the economist Bernhard Harms as a library department of the present-day Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW). In 1966 it was granted the status of central subject library for economics in Germany and admitted to the joint federal-state funding system. ZBW became a member of the Leibniz Association in 1990. In 2007, the State of Schleswig-Holstein separated ZBW from the Kiel Institute and established it as an independent public-law foundation. In the same year, ZBW integrated the library of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWA) and acquired a second location in Hamburg. In 2014 the German Library Association named ZBW Library of the Year.
ZBW holds approximately 4.4 million items and subscribes to over 27,100 journals, providing access to 2.3 million electronic documents. Its key services include the EconBiz search portal (over 10 million datasets), the EconStor open-access repository (over 134,000 full texts), and the EconDesk online reference service. ZBW also edits and publishes two journals of economic policy: Wirtschaftsdienst and Intereconomics. It participates in national licences negotiations for economics, operates the ZBW Journal Data Archive for reproducibility, and maintains off-site stacks in Flintbek.
ZBW provides open-access services through EconBiz and EconStor, accessible at www.zbw.eu. Physical reading rooms are open at both Kiel and Hamburg locations. Online registration for a free ZBW library card is available. ZBW is part of the Goportis consortium with ZB MED and TIB for coordinated national library services.
