Overview

Geoportal BIG is the official national geospatial data portal of Indonesia, operated by Badan Informasi Geospasial (BIG), the Geospatial Information Agency of Indonesia. Located in Cibinong, West Java, BIG is Indonesia's national mapping and geospatial authority, and its Geoportal serves as the primary online platform for discovering, accessing, and downloading geospatial datasets and services related to Indonesia.

History and Background

BIG was formerly known as the National Coordinator for Survey and Mapping Agency (Bakosurtanal) before being reorganised and renamed under its current mandate. The Geoportal reflects Indonesia's One Map Policy, initiated in 2010 by then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, which aimed to create a single, standardised geospatial reference framework for the country. BIG was formally mandated to lead the One Map Policy implementation by Presidential Regulation No. 9 of 2016. The Geoportal was built on the open-source PALAPA platform, developed in-house by BIG using technologies including GeoServer, PostGIS, OpenLayers, and pyCSW, and conforming to OGC and ISO standards.

Collections and Features

The portal hosts a wide range of authoritative geospatial datasets produced by BIG and contributed by other Indonesian government agencies, including topographic maps at multiple scales (1:25,000 and 1:50,000), administrative boundary data, land cover, and thematic datasets. The platform offers RESTful APIs, metadata search and management, and data download capabilities. Geospatial data encompasses coverage of the entire Indonesian archipelago.

Access and Usage

The portal is accessible at geoportal.big.go.id. It is used by government agencies, academics, the private sector, and the public in support of spatial planning, infrastructure development, environmental management, and disaster risk reduction.
