Degrees offered

The school offers a B.S. in Digital Communication and Media, with concentrations in Digital Broadcasting, Digital and Interactive Media, Digital Journalism, and Digital TV and Multimedia Production, alongside majors in Animation Media, Game Media, and Sports Media; a B.S. in Public Relations, Advertising and Applied Communication; and an M.S. in Mass Communication with concentrations in Global Strategic Communications and Spanish-language Journalism. An 18-month Master's in Advanced News Producing is also offered.

Programs and emphasis

The school emphasizes hands-on, bilingual training through its student-run newsroom, Caplin News, and its faculty-directed daily newscast, NEWSBREAK. It maintains partnerships with NBC Universal, Univision, the Miami Herald, the Miami Times, and the E.W. Scripps Company, and houses the Steven Cruz Institute for Media, Science and Technology (SCIMST).

History

The school, part of FIU's College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA), was renamed the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media in 2023 following a $10 million gift from Lee and Gita Caplin, alongside a contribution from Sam and Joyce Moore. In October 2025, Pulitzer Prize-winning alumnus Manny García became the school's inaugural Knight Foundation Executive Director, a role supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
