Flagpole Magazine

Flagpole Magazine, known as the "Colorbearer of Athens, Georgia," is an independent alternative newsweekly covering the cultural and political scene of Athens, Georgia, home to the University of Georgia.

The magazine was founded by Jared Bailey and Dennis Greenia in 1987 (a small number of secondary sources cite 1984, but the majority of sources, including Flagpole's own account, use 1987) to cover the city's independent music scene, including bands such as R.E.M., Pylon, and the B-52s. It is currently published by Alicia Nickles, co-owned with longtime editor Pete McCommons.

Flagpole covers local politics, arts, theater, food, and music, and produces the annual Flagpole Favorites reader poll. The Digital Library of Georgia, in partnership with the Athens-Clarke County Library, has digitized the magazine's archive from 1987 to 2012.

Flagpole is distributed free weekly at more than 300 locations in the Athens area and is available online at flagpole.com.
