The Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) was established on 25 June 1960 under the instruction of the Minister of Trade and Industry, initially as a department with 14 professional staff. In 1972, the Imperial Government reconstituted the organization by Order No. 74/1972 and Proclamation No. 303/1972 with broader duties under the name Central Statistical Office. Subsequent proclamations renamed the body the Central Statistical Authority (2005), then the Central Statistical Agency (2007), and finally the Ethiopian Statistical Service under its current proclamation. The ESS is a constituent agency of the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and maintains 25 branch offices across the country.
ESS serves as Ethiopia's official repository of statistical data collected through sample surveys, censuses, and administrative records. Its holdings include national population censuses, household income and consumption surveys, agricultural surveys, business surveys, labor force surveys, and sector-specific statistical reports. The ESS produces and disseminates data across more than 25 thematic areas essential for national planning, policy formulation, and monitoring of sustainable development goals.
Statistical publications, reports, and datasets are available through the ESS official website at ess.gov.et. The Agency provides data through its online portal, direct data requests, and a physical consultation service at its headquarters in Addis Ababa. ESS also provides technical guidance to government agencies and institutions on establishing administrative recording, registration, and reporting systems.
The ESS currently employs approximately 2,439 full-time professionals and approximately 3,000 temporary workers engaged in various survey activities. The agency has 25 branch offices distributed across Ethiopian cities and towns to support data collection and field operations.
