The Ethiopian Geological Institute (GIE) was originally established in 1968 as a department within the Ministry of Mines. It became an autonomous federal government agency in 1982 under the name Ethiopian Institute of Geological Surveys (EIGS), accountable to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. In 2000, it was restructured as the Geological Survey of Ethiopia (GSE), and most recently, pursuant to Proclamation No. 1263/2021 and Regulation No. 501/2022, it was reestablished in its current form as the Geological Institute of Ethiopia (GIE).
GIE maintains an extensive archive of geological, geochemical, geophysical, and hydrogeological maps and reports covering the entire territory of Ethiopia, primarily at a scale of 1:250,000. The institute also holds mineral potential assessments, geothermal resource data, engineering geological surveys, and core samples. Its geoscience data repository includes specimen collections suitable for museum display, alongside drilling records, water well data, and remote sensing datasets.
The Institute carries out basic geological and geochemical mapping, mineral exploration, groundwater assessment, geotechnical studies, and natural hazard investigations. Its laboratory provides analytical services for rock, soil, stream sediment, and water samples. GIE operates a drilling unit for core drilling, water well drilling, and geothermal deep well operations. The Institute collects, classifies, stores, and disseminates user-oriented geoscience data to government agencies, private firms, and researchers, contributing to the country's mineral resources development and infrastructure planning.
Geoscience data, reports, and maps are available to government and private users through GIE's data dissemination services. Researchers and prospectors can access processed datasets and laboratory analysis results through formal requests to the Institute. The official website at gie.gov.et provides access to information about available datasets and services.
