The National Archives of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: Arquivo Nacional Timor-Leste, ANTL) is the national archival institution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (East Timor). It is a General Directorate under the Ministry of State Administration (MAE) and serves as the central repository for historical and official documents from the country's Portuguese colonial, Indonesian occupation, and post-independence eras.
Following the end of Indonesian occupation in 1999 and the widespread destruction of infrastructure and public records, the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) established the National Records and Archives Services Section (NARAS) in 1999 as an emergency archival measure. The first team of archival workers was recruited in 2000, and documentation from various Indonesian-era administration buildings was collected. The national archive's permanent headquarters was established at the former INTERFET (International Force in East Timor) quarter in Caicoli, Dili, in August 2004. The institution is now governed by Decree-Law No. 4/2017 of 22 March (Organic Statute of the National Archive of Timor-Leste).
The ANTL holds documents from all three major administrative periods: the Portuguese colonial era, the Indonesian occupation (1975–1999), and the independent Timor-Leste state from 2002 onwards. Portuguese-era records, discovered in the attic of the Palácio do Governo after 1999, form a significant part of the collection. The Archives also hold Indonesian administration records, though these have been challenging to organize due to resource constraints. Ministerial records from independent Timor-Leste continue to be transferred to the Archives. In 2017, the University of Coimbra reached an agreement with the Timorese government to provide professional training and standardized procedures for conservation and archival management, including efforts related to the Max Stahl audiovisual collection.
The ANTL is open Monday through Friday, 08:00 to 17:30. As of 2018, the archive employed 56 staff members (30 permanent, 26 contracted). International partners, including the national archives of Brazil, Indonesia, and Australia, have provided technical and capacity-building support.
