E&E News, or Environment and Energy News, is a family of journals serving professionals and scholars in the environment and energy sectors. Founded in 1998 by Michael Witt and Kevin Braun as a Capitol Hill clipping service, E&E News evolved into a web-based weekly newsletter. E&E publishes five journals, with some crossover content: Climatewire, E&E Daily, Energywire, Greenwire, and E&E News PM. Readers can access subscriber-only content through daily email publications or by logging onto the platform. Subscription packages are tailored to individual preferences based on the number of users and desired publications.
In December 2020, POLITICO acquired E&E News, retaining the brand’s name and style of journalism. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. POLITICO, founded in 2007 by Publisher and Executive Chairman Robert Allbritton, was subsequently acquired by the Axel Springer SE Group in 2021. Axel Springer provides information across a portfolio of subsidiary media brands, including BILD (home industry), WELT (German television channel and website), INSIDER (digital news site), and POLITICO (political news site). In 2019 New York-based multinational private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts became the largest shareholder in Axel Springer, with a stake of 43.5%.
In 2022, E&E News received a Third Place award from the Society of Environmental Journalists at the 21st Annual Awards for Reporting on the Environment, for a piece describing the fight to save America’s coastal wetlands.
