e-codices is the Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland, providing free online access to medieval and early modern manuscripts from Swiss public, church-owned, and private collections. The project was founded in 2005 by Prof. Christoph Flüeler, then Professor for Manuscript Studies and Medieval Latin at the Medieval Institute of the University of Fribourg. It began as a joint pilot project with the Abbey Library of St. Gallen, during which 130 manuscripts were published online under the CESG (Codices electronici Sangallenses) initiative. Thanks to support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and the Swiss e-lib program, the project expanded to include manuscripts from across Switzerland. From 2013 to 2020, e-codices was integrated into swissuniversities' national program for scientific information infrastructure.
e-codices hosts more than 2,500 fully digitized manuscripts totaling over 800,000 pages from approximately 100 participating Swiss libraries and collections, including the Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen, the Foundation Martin Bodmer in Cologny, Basel University Library, Einsiedeln Abbey Library, and cantonal libraries and archives across Switzerland. Manuscripts range from late antiquity (5th century) through the early modern period (18th century), covering theology, law, medicine, natural history, music, and chronicles of Swiss history.
All digital reproductions and metadata on e-codices are freely accessible for non-commercial use. Full manuscript descriptions are available in German, French, Italian, and English. The library functions as a research tool for specialists, with scholarly manuscript descriptions linked to high-resolution digital facsimiles. e-codices has been widely adopted as an international model for virtual manuscript libraries.
