Drexel University is a private research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded in 1891 by Anthony J. Drexel — the Philadelphia financier and partner of J. P. Morgan — as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. It enrolls approximately 23,000 students across 13 colleges and schools and is nationally distinguished for its cooperative education program, one of the largest co-op programs in the world, which integrates full-time professional work into undergraduate degree programs, typically extending the bachelor's degree to five years. The university incorporates the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University — the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the Western Hemisphere, founded in 1812, which merged with Drexel in 2011. Key environmental and civic initiatives include The Environmental Collaboratory, a joint initiative between Drexel and the Academy launched in 2021 to pursue community-centered solutions to climate, environmental justice, and clean energy challenges. President John Fry has led the university since 2010.
