The Downey Patriot

The Downey Patriot is an independent, award-winning newspaper covering Downey, California, and surrounding communities.

The Patriot was established in May 2002 by veteran news editor John Adams, as a descendant of an earlier weekly, The Downey Eagle (published 1993-2002 by Jerry Andrews). Downey's newspaper history dates back to the Downey City Courier, founded in 1875, and the longer-running Downey Champion, founded in 1888. In 2006, the Patriot was sold to Downey native Jennifer DeKay-Givens.

The paper covers Downey city council and school board meetings, high school sports, crime, dining, entertainment, and nonprofit and health news, and also produces podcasts.
