New York, New York, USA
Documented is a nonprofit news organization based in New York City that reports on and for the city's immigrant communities, publishing in English, Spanish, Chinese and Haitian Creole through its website and its flagship newsletter, Early Arrival.
Documented was founded in 2018 by journalists Mazin Sidahmed and Max Siegelbaum, who met while reporting on migration issues in the Middle East and were later assigned to New York City. The project began from Siegelbaum's apartment with a for-profit subscription model before converting to a nonprofit a few months later. Brooklyn Org (formerly Brooklyn Community Foundation) provided Documented's first foundation funding, free office space for eighteen months and a spot in an accelerator program. Documented created a WhatsApp news service that has grown to more than 6,000 participants who help guide its editorial coverage, and it is the first non-Chinese newsroom in the United States with an official WeChat account. It shares a newsroom with The City. As of January 2025, Documented employs seventeen full-time staff plus freelance journalists.
