DeSmog (formerly The DeSmogBlog) is a global climate investigations organization that reports on misinformation campaigns and organizations opposing climate science and climate action. It operates as two independent nonprofit entities, DeSmog Global, based in North America, and DeSmog UK, based in the United Kingdom, and maintains a Climate Disinformation Database of individuals and organizations.
DeSmog was founded in January 2006 by James Hoggan, president of Vancouver, British Columbia public relations firm Hoggan and Associates, with seed funding from Hoggan and business partner John LeFebvre. It began as a blog concentrating on public relations malpractice before broadening into global climate coverage. Brendan DeMelle took over running the organization around 2010, shifting it to a grant-funded model. In February 2012, DeSmog published internal documents from the Heartland Institute, a libertarian think tank, in a story that drew wide attention. DeSmog UK was founded in 2014. DeSmog is a partner in the Covering Climate Now project and has had its investigations cited in the U.S. Congress, the U.K. and E.U. parliaments, and Canada's Senate.
