Delpher (delpher.nl) is a freely accessible online database of digitized Dutch-language newspapers, books, magazines, and radio news bulletin typescripts, developed and maintained by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB — National Library of the Netherlands) in collaboration with partner libraries and heritage institutions. It provides full-text search across over 140 million digitized pages of Dutch historical materials.
Delpher launched on 20 November 2013, consolidating four previously separate KB digital databases into one platform. Its roots go back further: the Database of Digital Daily Newspapers (Databank Digitale Dagbladen / DDD) project began in 2007 as a full-scale digitization initiative, building on earlier pilot projects. Delpher was developed in collaboration with the university libraries of Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, and Utrecht, the Meertens Institute, and the KB. As of its 10th anniversary in November 2023, the collection had expanded to over 140 million digitized pages.
Delpher's collections include: approximately 2 million digitized Dutch newspapers dating from 1618 to 1995 (including major national titles such as De Telegraaf, De Volkskrant, and Het Parool, and regional and colonial papers); over 400,000 digitized journals and magazines from 1800 to 2000; over 900,000 books (15th to 21st century); and approximately 1.5 million digitized radio news bulletin typescripts (ANP, 1937–1984). Newspapers and journals come from many Dutch and international repositories and archives. The collection includes disproportionately comprehensive coverage of Second World War materials due to targeted government funding.
Delpher is an exceptional resource for journalism and media history research, providing full-text access to Dutch newspapers from 1618 onward, including some of the oldest continuously published newspapers in the world. The ANP radio bulletins collection documents the evolution of broadcast journalism in the Netherlands across the mid-20th century. Major national papers such as De Telegraaf (founded 1893) and Het Parool (founded 1941 as a wartime resistance paper) are well represented.
Delpher is freely accessible to all users. Materials older than 140 years (newspapers) or 40 years (journals) are in the public domain. More recent copyrighted materials are available on request for academic, research, or journalism purposes. The platform provides OAI-PMH and SRU APIs for metadata and search access. Bulk download datasets are available for research.
