The University of Debrecen University and National Library (DEENK — Debreceni Egyetemi és Nemzeti Könyvtár) was established in 1914 simultaneously with the founding of the University of Debrecen (then known as the University of Debrecen Royal Hungarian). The library opened to the public in 1918, initially with 10,000 volumes. In 1932, it moved to its current neo-Baroque building on Egyetem tér, designed by architect Korb Flóris. The library's collection initially grew through donations, bequests, and materials from dissolved institutions.
Under the directorship of Kovács Máté, the library experienced a golden age, and in 1952 it became the second comprehensive legal deposit collection site in Hungary. Following the unification of Debrecen's higher education institutions into the University of Debrecen in 2000, the central university library was reconstituted in 2001 as DEENK, integrating the collections of predecessor libraries. The 1997 Act CXL confirmed its national library status.
DEENK is the second largest library in Hungary and one of the largest service units of the University of Debrecen, with a collection exceeding 6 million documents. Holdings include books, periodicals, manuscripts, rare books, maps, posters, media, patents, standards, and digital materials. The collection is organized into seven disciplinary branches: agricultural sciences, humanities and natural sciences, life sciences, engineering, pedagogical sciences, social sciences, and music. The library operates seven branch library units across five university campuses. It is the coordinating center of the National Document Supply System and participates in the MOKKA (Hungarian National Joint Cataloging Association) project. Unique special collections include the Kner Printing History Collection and the Austrian Collection.
University members have automatic access; external readers over 14 years of age may purchase membership (free for certain categories including library professionals, teachers, those with disabilities, and individuals over 70). Services are provided equally across all campus locations. The library uses the Corvina integrated library system. Its digital repository (DEA) is accessible online.
