Overview

Dati.gov.it is the national open data portal of Italy, serving as the central catalog for datasets published by Italian public administrations at both local and national level. It is managed by the Agency for Digital Italy (Agenzia per l'Italia Digitale — AgID) in partnership with the Department for Digital Transformation (Dipartimento per la Trasformazione Digitale).

History

Italy launched dati.gov.it in 2011 upon joining the Open Government Partnership (OGP). In 2013, AgID began developing the Italian National Open Data Agenda and the Guidelines for Public Sector Information, which were released in 2014. A major upgrade of the portal was launched in June 2015. In recent years the portal has been further developed to incorporate a catalog of public administration databases, making it the single access point for both government databases and the open data catalog in Italy. The portal has consistently ranked among the highest quality national open data portals in Europe, with the European Data Portal recognizing Italy as a leader in metadata quality.

Collections and Holdings

As of published monitoring data (2024), dati.gov.it hosts over 73,000 dataset records from Italian public administrations. Of datasets submitted to the European data portal, approximately 60% of Italy's contributions are rated as 'excellent' quality. The portal covers a broad range of themes including environment, transportation, economics, healthcare, and cultural heritage. Companion portals include geodati.gov.it for spatial data.

Access and Usage

The portal is freely accessible online at dati.gov.it. It supports the DCAT-AP-EU standard for metadata, translated into the Italian DCAT-AP-NL profile. Government organizations can publish dataset descriptions either directly or via automatic API harvesting from their own portals. The portal federates to the European Data Portal (data.europa.eu).
