DataverseNL National Research Data Repository Platform (Netherlands)

Overview

DataverseNL (dataverse.nl) is the Netherlands' national research data repository platform, offering Dutch research institutions a shared infrastructure for depositing, managing, sharing, and publishing research data openly. It is co-provided by participating Dutch research institutions and DANS (Data Archiving and Networked Services), a national expert center for research data, hosted in The Hague.

History

DataverseNL's origins trace to 2014 when Tilburg University and Utrecht University initiated the Dutch Dataverse Network (DDN), driven in part by new European privacy legislation requiring Dutch research institutions to store their data domestically. In 2015, the name was changed to DataverseNL as more institutions joined. DANS has managed the technical infrastructure since 2014, while participating institutions are responsible for managing their own deposited data. DataverseNL celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024. The platform is built on the open-source Dataverse software developed by Harvard University's Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS).

Collections and Participation

As of 2024, 26 Dutch research institutions participate in DataverseNL, including major universities such as Utrecht, Tilburg, Maastricht, and others. Each institution has its own dataverse (collection folder) within the platform. Datasets are assigned DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) for persistent citation and are discoverable via Google Scholar, Google Dataset Search, and the Netherlands Research Portal within OpenAIRE.

Access and Usage

DataverseNL is publicly accessible for browsing and downloading published datasets. Depositing data requires an institutional account via SURFconext or a local account. The platform supports access restrictions for sensitive data and facilitates FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data practices. Tilburg University's dataverse within DataverseNL holds the internationally recognized CoreTrustSeal quality certification, the first such certification within the platform.
