DataJournalism.com is a free online learning and resource platform for data journalists worldwide, created by the European Journalism Centre (EJC) and supported by the Google News Initiative. It provides data journalists with free resources, materials, online video courses, community forums, and handbooks, serving practitioners from beginners through to experienced professionals. The platform is operated by the EJC, a non-profit organisation founded in 1992 and based in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
The EJC began running data journalism training programmes and workshops across Europe in the late 2000s. In 2011, the EJC and the Open Knowledge Foundation co-launched the Data Journalism Handbook project at MozFest, which attracted contributions from leading journalists, professors, software developers, and data analysts and has since been published in multiple editions and translated into over nine languages, downloaded more than 150,000 times. After a decade of experience running data journalism programmes, the EJC formally launched DataJournalism.com in 2018 as a centralised online hub for data journalism education, resources, and community. The platform is supported by the Google News Initiative.
DataJournalism.com hosts a range of resources including free online video courses covering topics such as Python for journalists, data visualisation, fundamental search techniques, and countering hate speech. It publishes longform reads on topics at the intersection of data and journalism, including climate change coverage, internet shutdowns, environmental investigations, and accessible data visualisation. The platform hosts the full text of the Data Journalism Handbooks (including the Verification Handbook for Disinformation and Media Manipulation) and publishes a podcast called Conversations With Data. It also conducts an annual State of Data Journalism survey and has hosted award programmes recognising outstanding data journalism internationally. A community forum enables data journalists to connect and share knowledge.
DataJournalism.com is freely accessible at datajournalism.com. Registration is free and enables enrolment in premium courses and participation in community forums. All course content, handbooks, and long reads are provided at no charge.
