data.gov.gr is the official national open data portal of Greece, operated under the authority of the Ministry of Digital Governance and the General Secretariat of the Greek Prime Minister. An initial version of the central platform was created around 2013 as part of Greece's commitment under the Open Government Partnership. A substantially upgraded version was subsequently launched to centralize the publication and discovery of machine-readable government datasets, and the portal has continued to evolve in compliance with the EU DCAT-AP interoperability standard. The portal's framework is governed by Law 4727/2020, which updated Greek regulations on open data and public sector information reuse.
The portal hosts more than 10,500 datasets divided across 17 thematic topics, ranging from economic indicators and health statistics to environmental data and education records. Data is provided in standard formats including JSON, SHP, CSV, and XLSX. A beta version of the portal also offers interactive data visualizations for ten key topic areas such as COVID-19 statistics and school counts by region.
Data is generally accessible via the portal's web interface. Users may need to register and obtain an API token for programmatic data access. The Greek government has been working to increase dataset quality and quantity, including a 2023–2024 initiative to encourage public bodies to identify and publish machine-readable datasets.
