data.gov.hk is the Hong Kong SAR Government's official one-stop open data portal, coordinated by the Digital Policy Office (DPO). The portal's predecessor, Data. One, was launched in 2011 as an 18-month pilot scheme to provide geo-referenced public facilities data and real-time traffic data. The revamped portal, renamed Data.Gov.HK, came into place in March 2015, significantly expanding the number of available datasets and introducing new functionality such as charting and mapping directly on the portal. The DPO — formed in July 2024 by merging the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) and the Efficiency Office — now oversees the portal's operation and open data policy.
The portal aggregates datasets from numerous government departments and public and private organisations, covering categories including demographics, economy, environment, health, housing, transportation, and more. As of 2015, the portal offered over 6,000 datasets in 18 categories; this number has continued to grow. Historical data for datasets is also available for download over specified date ranges. The Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) Portal, launched separately for geographic data, complements data.gov.hk.
All data on data.gov.hk is available for free reuse for both commercial and non-commercial purposes under the portal's Terms and Conditions of Use. The portal provides direct download links as well as real-time data APIs for developers. No registration is required for most data access.
