History and Founding

The DANE Central Data Catalog (Catálogo Central de Datos) is the microdata portal of Colombia's Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE), the country's principal statistical agency. DANE itself has operated for more than fifty years as the entity responsible for planning, collecting, processing, analyzing, and disseminating official statistics for Colombia. The microdata catalog was developed as part of efforts, supported internationally through programs such as the IHSN's Accelerated Data Program, to document, archive, and make accessible Colombia's survey and census microdata in a standardized, open-access format.

The DANE Central Data Catalog hosts microdata and metadata for Colombia's major surveys, censuses, and administrative data collections. It contains records for more than 100 different surveys across fields including demographics, economics, agriculture, industry, quality of life, housing, education, and labor markets. Where legally permissible, public-use microdata files are available for direct download; restricted datasets are accessible through additional procedures. All datasets are documented using the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) standard.
