Memphis, Tennessee, USA
The Daily Memphian is an online daily news source covering Memphis, Tennessee, operated by the nonprofit Memphis Fourth Estate, Inc.
The Daily Memphian launched September 17, 2018, backed by roughly $7 million raised from local individuals, foundations and businesses rather than outside investors. It is led by Eric Barnes, longtime publisher of Memphis's The Daily News and a former president of the Tennessee Press Association. Since launch, The Daily Memphian has grown to 40 full-time journalists and about 20 freelancers, published more than 35,000 articles by its fifth anniversary in September 2023, and raised an additional $6 million in ongoing philanthropic support. The outlet relies primarily on paid subscriptions and advertising rather than continued fundraising, while offering free access to local schools, libraries and community organizations and free election and pandemic coverage.
