Providence, Rhode Island, USA
The Brown Daily Herald is the financially and editorially independent, nonprofit student newspaper of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, serving as the university's daily newspaper of record.
The Herald first appeared as a daily on December 2, 1891, growing out of an earlier student paper tradition dating to 1866, and is the second-oldest student newspaper among America's college dailies. In 1933, the Herald's "War Against War" editorial campaign urging students to pledge against bearing arms except in the case of invasion prompted the Rhode Island General Assembly to investigate the paper for alleged disloyalty; the legislature ultimately took no action. In 1995, the Herald became one of the first college newspapers in the country to publish online alongside its print edition.
The Herald also publishes Post- Magazine, a weekly arts and culture supplement, and numerous Herald alumni have gone on to journalism careers, including several Pulitzer Prize winners.
The Herald is governed by a board of trustees comprising editorial staffers, business staffers and alumni; editorial leadership rotates among student editors each academic year.
The Herald serves the Brown University community, publishing Monday through Friday during the academic year with additional issues during commencement and orientation, supported by more than 250 students across its journalism, business and web divisions.
